Om Baby Christmas Indie Gift Guide

December 02, 2020 alice clarkson

This year, I’m sure we all want to add a bit of extra sparkle to our Christmas and treat ourselves and our loved ones to some much-deserved gifts. If you can, supporting small businesses can make a real difference to people’s lives – for every item you buy from a company with a face, you are literally putting food on their table (and not into the pockets of billionaires). Not just that, but you can get something hand-made with love, in small batches, that isn’t adding more pollutants to our environment.

That’s why I have put together this list of eco-conscious gifts from independent businesses that I love, which will give us some joy whilst having as little impact on the planet as possible. Take a look below and check out their websites for more gifts that will be treasured for years.

 La Aquarelle
£32
Level up your bedtime routine. La Aquarelle is a gorgeous small brand that specialises in natural and organic sleep accessories. They make all of their products by hand in the UK using plant dyes and natural fabrics, connecting you with nature throughout the night. This set includes an eye mask, lavender sleep sachet and cotton drawstring bag to take it on your travels. Dreamy!

Young Double
£25.00 - £35.00
Say it with a sweater. Young Double is a small batch printing brand by Rox Webster, who I collaborated with on my A/W shoot. Rox hand draws all the prints and uses eco-friendly inks, non-toxic dyes and prints on ethically-sourced or organic garments.
Slow Down Club

Hand-poured soy candles

£22

The perfect accompaniment for a slow day indoors. Choose from dreamy scents such as Golden Cinders (orange, clove & cinnamon) and Night Sky (Lavender, Rosemary & Neroli) by Slow Down Club. Founded by Amanda and Aimee, a married couple on a personal mission to live a more balanced life. They design goods that serve as everyday memos to help humans to slow down and reconnect to what’s important. And a percentage of profits go to Mind, the mental health charity.

Upcycled Christmas art box by LOTS OF LOVELY ART (LOLA)

Kano

Dolmen necklace

£65

This brass pendant necklace is inspired by various standing stones in Britain and is part of Kano’s Relic collection. Silversmith Sara Farrag-Kramer creates everything by hand in their raw state, often using reclaimed materials, resulting in shapes and pieces that are contemporary in style but carry with them inspiration from many sources. I love the whole collection! Custom commissions close today but you can order from this collection until the 17th.

Hand of Gaia

Earth print bodysuit

£16.50

Hand of Gaia is run by Biancha & Gaia (Mother Maker and Muse) and is their answer to a lack of contemporary African-inspired clothing for babies created by Africans. This Earth Print bodysuit is 100% organic and fair-trade cotton and part of their Elements Collection - four styles specially designed to inspire mindfulness and intuitive connection with nature. Go check out their purposeful gifts that serve as a reminder to connect with our Divine Selves.

Hats of Faith

£8.99

This book is a beautifully illustrated, simple introduction to the shared custom of head covering across many faiths. Using accurate terminology and phonetic pronunciations it helps educate and prepare young children and their parents for our diverse modern world. Let’s celebrate the head coverings from many faiths including Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Rastafarian and Sikh.

This is also available at Annual Store which is one of my favourite online shops for green gifts for kids.

La Basketry

Get crafty at Christmas with this Twine Basket Kit that contains everything you need to make a beautiful and colourful basket. Plan Toys

Wooden doll families

£19.99

These sweet wooden dolls come in a range of ethnicities and make for hours of pretend play. All doll heads and bodies are made of solid wood and their arms and legs are wire that can be easily shaped. Little hands love getting to grips with these dolls made from rubber trees that no longer produce latex, non-formaldehyde glue, organic colour pigments; and water-colour dyes – and the whole process is carbon-neutral too. And all toys come packaged in recycled, non-toxic packaging which can go straight into your recycling bin. Super!
